Obverse Description:
Released on February 28, 2005, this coin was the thrid nickel released in the Westward Journey Series™. This coin highlights a new design of Thomas Jefferson for the first time in 67 years. The design was based on the marble bust of Jefferson by the French sculptor Jean Antoine Houdon, completed in 1789, and made agre-appropriate by utilizing later paintings by gilbert Stuart and Rembrandt Peale. The coin is inscribed: Liberty - based upon Jefferson's own handwriting, In God We Trust and 2005. President George W. Bush was was in office when this legislation was signed. Three United States Mint Directors, Jay W. Johnson of Wisconsin, Henrietta Holsman Fore of Nevada, and Edmund C. Moy of Wisconsin, served under President Bush's tenure.

This coin, themed American Bison, features a side -view of an American bison grazing. The postmark of February 28, 2005, Washburn, North Dakota, marked the day that the American Bison nickels was released to the Federal Reserve Bank and to the public. The American Bison nickel is the third design in the Westward Journey Nickel Series™,
