This coin was first produced in 1938 and it replaced the 1913 Indian-head nickel - also know as the Buffalo nickel The image is of President Thomas Jefferson in profile, as painted by Rembrandt Peale in 1800. The inscriptions on the coin says; In God We Trust, Liberty, and the year. Two United States Mint Directors, Elias Boudinot and Robert Patterson, served during President Jefferson's tenure in office
