Obverse Description:
Released on August 3, 2004, the Keelboat design was the second nickel released in the Westward Journey Series™. The nickel commemorates the 200th anniversay of the Louisana Purchase. It highlights the bust of President Thomas Jefferson. The coin is inscribed: Liberty, In GOD We Trust, and 2004. President George W. Bush was was in office when this legislation was signed. Three United States Mint Directors, Jay W. Johnson of Wisconsin, Henrietta Holsman Fore of Nevada, and Edmund C. Moy of Wisconsin, served under President Bush's tenure.

This coin, themed Keelboat, features an angled, side-view of the keelboat, with full sail, that transported members of the Lewis and Clark expedition and supplies as they traveled the rivers of the Louisiana Territory in search of a northwest passage to the Pacific Ocean. The coin is inscribed: United States Of America, E Pluribus Unum, Lewis and Clark, and Five Cents.
