Obverse Description:
Released in March 1, 2004, the Louisiana Purchase/Peace Medal design was the first nickel released in the 2004 Westward Journey Series™. The nickel commemorates the 200th anniversay of the Louisana Purchase. It highlights the bust of President Thomas Jefferson. The coin is inscribed: Liberty, In GOD We Trust, and 2004. President George W. Bush was was in office when this legislation was signed. Three United States Mint Directors, Jay W. Johnson of Wisconsin, Henrietta Holsman Fore of Nevada, and Edmund C. Moy of Wisconsin, served under President Bush's tenure.

This coin is themed the Louisana Purchase Peace Medal design. It highlights a rendition of the reverse of the original Jefferson Peace Medal design, by John Reich, which was commissioned for the Lewis and Clark's expedition, and presented ceremonially to Native American Chiefs and other leaders. The design features clasped hands which signifys peace and friendship. The coin is inscribed: United States of America, Louisana Purchase, 1803, E Pluribus Unum, and Five Cents.
