This limited-edition cover – only 35,000 will be produced – is the 47th in the series and features two New Mexico quarters, one each from the United States Mints at Philadelphia and Denver, from the first day of mintage, March 3, 2007.
These proof and uncirculated gold coins are being struck to honor Dolley Madison as a part of the First Spouse Gold Coin series. The obverse, designed and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Don Everhart, features a portrait of Dolley Madison. The reverse, designed by Artistic Infusion Program Master Designer Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Don Everhart, portrays a famous act of heroism in which Dolley Madison saved White House cabinet papers and a Gilbert Stuart portrait of George Washington from destruction at the hands of oncoming British troops who occupied and burned Washington, DC, during the War of 1812.
