Welcome to the fall 2009 issue of Making Cents, the online newsletter that tells you what's new and striking at the United States Mint. Be sure to check back every 3 months for a new issue.
The United States Mint H.I.P. Pocket Change Pals are on the road again! This time they're proud and pleased to take you to Canada, the northern neighbor of the United States.
Goldie, Nero, Peter, Flip, Inspector Collector, Plinky, and Bill have special adventures to share with you. As part of the trip, the Travel Guide will fill you in on Canadian food, landmarks, and more. And when you take your Customs Quiz, you get pictures of Canadian coins to print as souvenirs for every right answer.
Where can you meet your plane and begin your tour? On the Toons page at "Coins of the World," of course!

James Knox Polk: Many find him to be one of the most decisive presidents in United States history. There were a number of presidential "firsts" during his time in office, some of which may surprise you.
In honor of the recent release of the Polk Presidential $1 Coin, Nero the Mint Police Dog lists his top 11 facts about our 11th chief executive. Check out the list and see the coin as Nero presents October's Coin of the Month!

Flowers bloom beside a yellow-breasted bird and some palm trees on the shore. Where is this lush tropical scene? On the US Virgin Islands quarter!
After searching out lots of interesting details about this setting, Inspector Collector presented this coin as the Coin of the Month for September. In case you haven't read his findings, you can still get there through the Past Picks page.
The Northern Mariana Islands quarter brings us from the waters near the mainland USA to the Pacific Ocean near Guam (you remember the Guam quarter, right?). There we see images of island life and history, also in a tropical setting. Peter presents this quarter as November's Coin of the Month.
And both coins, of course, are profiled on the 2009 Quarters page.
