2008 Platinum Bullion Coin

Have you ever seen a coin worth one hundred dollars? Probably not. Well, neither have I, except in the pictures on this page.

The coin shown there is an American Eagle platinum bullion coin. There aren't too many of them around because people don't spend them. Platinum, like gold and silver, is called a "precious" metal. By owning these coins, people can own a precious metal in one of its most beautiful forms.

The government guarantees the weight and purity of these coins, and that alone makes them special. But what makes them even more special is that their face value of $100 is the highest ever to appear on a US coin!

All American Eagles are legal tender coins, which means they could be spent to buy things. One of the reasons you wouldn't want to spend a coin like this is because it costs more than $100.
The actual price changes as the price of platinum changes.
Although their face value is mostly symbolic, it shows that they are official US coins.

As for me, I think the best part about bullion coins is that they come not only in platinum but also in silver and in my favorite color: gold!
