Welcome to the fall 2005 issue of Making Cents, the online newsletter that tells you what's new and striking at the United States Mint.  Be sure to check back every 3 months for a new issue.

Finding Gold...Just in Time

This Time Machine graphic highlights Era 5 and the Colorado Gold Rush of 1859. Bill and a friend meet a prospector.

Bill the Mint Buffalo and his friend John had a new adventure in time over the summer.  They went back to the days of the Colorado Gold Rush and learned a lot.  If you take the trip with them, you can help them pan for gold yourself!  Later, learn about famous wild West personalities, what it means to assay gold, and lots more.  Take another great trip in the Time Machine and remember the year: 1859!

Is That the Ocean I See?

In this image, Goldie searches for the ocean and sees an Ocean in View Nickel.

If you're looking through your change and you think you see the ocean, you may be looking at the Ocean in View Nickel.  It's the most recent design in the Westward Journey Nickel Series commemorating the journey of Lewis and Clark and their Corps of Discovery to the shores of the Pacific Ocean.  This cool design is covered on the New Nickels page so you can learn more about it.  You can get more from Goldie, who presents this nickel as the November 2005 Coin of the Month.

Quarters of the Quarter: Kansas and West Virginia

The fall quarter is a rich one, with two new additions to the 50 State Quarters® Program.  The Kansas design was released recently, with its neat bison-and-sunflowers image.  Inspector Collector featured this coin as September's Coin of the Month, but you can still see what he has to say about it as one of the Coin of the Month "Past Picks".

Image shows Bill and the Inspector with their Kansas and West Virginia quarters.

In December, Bill gets to share his interest in the West Virginia quarter with you.  As his choice for Coin of the Month in December, he'll tell you all about the bridge on the quarter and the answer to the question that has puzzled him for a long time:  Why is there a West Virginia but no East Virginia?
