Making Cents - All the news that's fit to mint! - What's news at the United States Mint!

Welcome to the summer 2014 issue of Making Cents, the online newsletter that tells you what’s new and striking at the United States Mint.  Be sure to check back every 3 months for a new issue.

Summer in the Air

Nero in a hammock and Inspector Collector enjoy the summer sun.

Time for most every student’s favorite season: summer!  Whatever you do this summer, you can be sure that the United States Mint H.I.P. Pocket Change Web site is always as near as the nearest computer.  We’ll keep creating games and uncovering coin info for you as long as you keep visiting!

If you find yourself with time on your hands, check out the boredom-busting Fun with Coins page.  It gives you ideas for art projects, games, and other fun things you can do to fill up those lazy summer days.

And don’t forget about starting a coin collection, or building up the collections you have.  If you need any tips on collecting, remember the wealth of knowledge in Inspector Collector’s Coin Course.

$1 Coin Events:  Calvin Coolidge

The front of the Coolidge Presidential $1 Coin.

Which Presidential $1 Coin has been created most recently?  During the last quarter, it was the coin that bears the name and portrait of 30th president Calvin Coolidge.

President Coolidge’s hands-off approach to governing earned him the nickname "Silent Cal."  Still, he managed to achieve some major legislation into law, including an international agreement to outlaw war.

You can download an outline of this coin to color from the Presidential $1 Coin Program page.  Read more about President Coolidge’s coin on its Presidential $1 Coin page and the May Coin of the Month

Coming up next time:  the Herbert Hoover Presidential $1 Coin.

Quarter of the Quarter:  Arches

Nero stands beside the Arches National Park quarter.

The third quarter released in 2014 honors Arches National Park in Utah.  This park is a wonderland of colorful rocks like no others, including balancing boulders.

The quarter’s design focuses on Delicate Arch, a true rock star. Like most rock stars, the arches at Arches don’t hold still for long… at least, not very long.  If you don’t know how these rocks roll, check out Nero’s report in the June Coin of the Month!
