The Lewis and Clark Adventure
This image shows the Keelboat Nickel described in the text.

Keelboat Nickel

Your award for running the river is a Keelboat Nickel to add to your collection.  The design shows the type of keelboat that Lewis and Clark used to travel up river.  The legend on this design is "Lewis and Clark," honoring the leaders of the expedition.

Several types of boats were used, including canoes and pirogues, but the neat thing about the keelboat is that Captain Lewis designed it himself.  He had it built during the year before the trip began, as he was gathering supplies and studying the sciences he would need to fulfill his mission in the West.
