The 50 State Quarters® Program lesson plans are now available on the United States Mint H.I.P. Pocket Change™ Web site for you to use in your classroom! Take a look at the lesson plans created specifically to celebrate the Idaho quarter: My Happy Habitat (K and 1), Poetry to My Ears (2 and 3), and Illustrated Beauty (4 through 6). The Idaho quarter features the peregrine falcon. This falcon was the first animal protected by the Endangered Species Act in 1969, but today, its numbers have grown to the point that it has been taken off the list of endangered animals. Both the 2005 California quarter and the 2005 American Bison Nickel feature animals that were or are endangered species. Have students research the endangered or threatened species of different states. What is the difference between endangered and threatened? Ask students to think of ways that humans can help protect and preserve the wildlife of all 50 states. Remember that endangered species are not just animals, but plants, trees, and flowers too!
