Make a "Connection"

Find out more about each of the Presidential $1 Coins and their presidents in the "The Coins Are Coming" section.  James Monroe was elected the 5th President of the United States in 1817.  As president, Monroe laid the foundation for American foreign policy in an 1823 message to Congress.  This policy, which warned European powers against expanding in the Western Hemisphere, became known as the Monroe Doctrine.  Learn more about the Monroe Doctrine with the 2006 October Coin of the Month.  Visit the related Teacher Feature, "Hold that Thought", where students will research and learn about the importance and meaning of honoring historic documents and policy statements on coins.
