Now Hear This

Overview

Students will research a famous blind or visually impaired individual and their accomplishments.  Students will use audio technology to share what they have learned with the class.

Activity

After reading the August Coin of the Month, discuss with the students some of the challenges that not having all or some of your vision may pose.  Record the student responses on chart paper in one color.  Next ask the class to brainstorm ways that some of these challenges can be overcome.  Record these answers in a different color on the chart paper.

Locate a source that lists famous individuals who are blind or visually impaired.  In addition locate audio technology that would allow student pairs to record an oral presentation that can be shared.  Divide the class into pairs and explain that each pair will be researching a famous individual who was blind or visually impaired.  Each pair will collect biographical information and the accomplishments of this individual and report to the class about this person.  Inform the class that the reports must be completed using audio technology that can be shared and re-played for the class and even shared with the rest of the school.  Each pair will find a creative way to share their information orally such as by creating a song, poem, or staging a mock interview.  Have student audio presentations available in the library, computer lab, or for check-out to other classrooms.  Have the student pairs create a listening guide to accompany the audio presentations that other students can complete.

The 2003 Alabama quarter celebrates the spirit of courage.  Above the "Spirit of Courage" banner is the image of Helen Keller, a truly courageous woman.  Although she couldn't see or hear, she worked hard to do some amazing things, such as write books, give speeches, read raised letters and Braille, and earn a degree at college.  Learn more about Helen Keller with this collection of lesson plans:
