Vicksburg National Military Park Quarter

Overview

Students will use the Vicksburg National Military Park quarter to learn about the part that Vicksburg, Mississippi, and the USS Cairo played in the outcome of the Civil War.

Activity

Read the September Coin of the Month article to learn about Vicksburg, Mississippi, and the USS Cairo, featured on the Vicksburg National Military Park quarter.

Divide the class into pairs.  Have one member of the pair research Vicksburg, Mississippi, to learn about its key role in the outcome of the Civil War.  Invite the other student to research the USS Cairo, including its construction, the types of belongings found onboard after its recovery, and what the belongings tell us about that time in American history.

Have the student pairs share their findings and take on the role of reporters during the Civil War.  Have the students write a newspaper article outlining key Civil War events regarding Vicksburg, Mississippi, and the USS Cairo.

As an extension, have the students create a detailed map demonstrating the importance of the Mississippi River regarding the outcome of the Civil War.
