Presidential $1 Coin Lesson Plans (James A. Garfield)
Students will create character maps and picture books and learn about James A. Garfield through the Presidential $1 Coin.
Read the December Coin of the Month article to learn about the man who was our nation's 20th President.
In pairs or small groups, have the students research James A. Garfield, noting current events of the time and key events throughout President Garfield's life and presidency. The students should briefly summarize and illustrate key points on a character map. Encourage them to use colorful illustrations or symbols that closely represent the events that portray Garfield's life both before and as President. Have the students present the character maps and display in the classroom.
Using information from class discussions and the results of their research, have the students create a picture book to share with other classes.
