Flames of Freedom


Students will research and summarize details from the 2014 Civil Rights Act of 1964 Silver Dollar. 


Display a K-W-L chart titled “Civil Rights Act of 1964.“  Complete the “K” and “W” areas of the chart with your students.  Display the Civil Rights Act of 1964 Silver Dollar page and have your students study the design. 

As a class, discuss the designs on the obverse and reverse, emphasizing the details of the images.  Tell the students that the obverse features three people holding hands at a civil rights march.  The man holds a sign that reads “We Shall Overcome.”  The design is symbolic of all marches that helped galvanize the civil rights movement. 

The reverse design features three flames intertwined to symbolize the freedom of education, freedom to vote, and freedom to control one's own destiny.  The design was inspired by the following quote by Martin Luther King, Jr.: “They get the fire hose. They fail to realize that water can only put out physical fire.  But water can never drown the fire of freedom.”  As a class, discuss Martin Luther King, Jr., his quote, and the image details on the coin.

As a class, discuss the terms “civil rights,” “galvanize,” and “freedom.”  Write the definitions on chart paper and post it in the classroom. 

Using available online and classroom resources, have the students research the Civil Rights Act of 1964, including key people involved and current events of the time.  Discuss the students' findings and record them on a graphic organizer. 

Have the students complete a summary of what they've learned through journaling, essays, or visual presentations. 

As a class, complete the “L” column of the chart. 

Make a Connection

Have students learn about civil rights with the 1956 Era of the Time Machine and its related Teacher Feature “Dedication on Display.”
