Description:
Adam Eckfeldt (1769–1852) (Chief Coiner of the United States Mint) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and became a blacksmith and expert machinist. Eckfeldt was later an apprentice to his father, who was a die-maker. President James Madison appointed Eckfeldt as Chief Coiner of the United States Mint in 1814.

His numerous contributions to the Mint include the steel dies for the Jefferson medals that were struck at the Philadelphia Mint. Mr. Eckfeldt also assisted with the engraving of the presidential medals for Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Adams, Jackson, and Van Buren.
