October 2005

Over the past month, new content has been added to the United States Mint H.I.P. Pocket Change Web site.  To help you learn about "What's New For You," links to this new content are listed below.

Time Machine

Time Machine—Be sure to take each new trip wit your H.I.P. Pocket Change Pals in the Time Machine!  In Era 5, the Gold Rush Era, you'll be transported to the year 1859 to visit Pikes Peak, Colorado.  Learn about the job of a prospector and the tools needed to strike it rich!  Be sure to check out the associated Teacher Feature, "A Dollar Goes a Long Way," a lesson about the Old Spanish Trail and why it became a heavily traveled route of commerce.

Have a Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween!—Visit this page for some haunting Halloween lore and learn all about the chilling part coins have played in the world of the gruesome.  Then, help the H.I.P. Pocket Change Pals get dressed up for Halloween by taking the Costume Quiz.

Coin News

October Coin of the Month—It's October and Peter is eager to tell you about one of the smallest historic coins ever minted.  Your students can learn about this special silver 3-cent coin, also known as a "trime."  Since a stamp cost just 3 cents in 1851, this tiny coin made buying stamps much easier.  The associated Teacher Feature, "Metals for Minting," has students using the Periodic Table to learn information about the elements (metals) used in minting coins.
