July 2008

During the past month, new information and activities have been added to the United States Mint H.I.P. Pocket Change Web site.  To help you learn "What's New for You," we've listed and linked these features below.

Celebrate Independence Day!  Check out this page to learn about he Declaration of Independence.  This page includes brief informational text about the ratification of the Declaration and two interactive activities based on fun facts about some of its signers.  Help your students learn that there is more to the 4th of July than fireworks!

July Coin of the Month:  Her's a cool item from coin history:  the 3-cent nickel!  Inspector Collector presents the coin's brief history and its context in terms of the use of nickel in circulating coinage.  After you and your students have read about this coin, check out the related Teacher Feature "Letters or Numbers?" to learn about the roman numerals featured on the coin's reverse.

Making Cents:  The latest issue of this "quarterly" e-newlestter takes you on a "scroll" through history, highlights what to expect in 2009, and names our most popular games in 2007.  There is also a brand new "Cactus" crossword puzzle based on the newsletter's contents.  If you'd like to sign up to receive announcements about Making Cents, new lesson plans, and special projects, join the Teachers' Network.
