December 2009

During the past month, new information and activities have been added to the United States Mint H.I.P. Pocket Change™ Web site.   To help you learn "What's New for You," we've listed and linked these features below.

December Coin of the Month:  Goldie celebrates the last dollar coin of 2009, the one that honors Zachary Taylor, the twelfth president of the United States.   His long Army career included keeping peace on the western frontier and winning battles against forces larger than his own in the Mexican-American War. After reading the December Coin of the Month page, check out the related Teacher Feature.   You can also go to The Coins Are Coming to learn more about the Presidential $1 Coin that honors Taylor and his accomplishments.

Presidential $1 Coin Program Lesson Plans:  Download free lesson plans and access resource materials related to the Presidential $1 Coin program.   You can also have your students see all of the Presidential $1 Coins so far and learn about each of the Presidents they commemorate under "The Coins Are Coming."   A separate page tells all about the Statue of Liberty, featured on the coin's reverse.

Presidential $1 Coin Lesson Plan Resource Center:  The coins of the Presidential $1 Coin Program are waiting to enrich your curriculum.   Come and explore the collection of lesson plans and teaching resources for you and your students.

A look ahead:  Beginning in 2010, the United States Mint will mint and issue 56 quarter-dollar coins featuring designs depicting national parks and other national sites as part of the United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters® Program.   Also in 2010, the United States Mint will mint and issue four new Presidential $1 Coins as well as one new Native American $1 Coin.   With the new year comes a new look for the United States Mint education pages.   Look for an updated layout, new classroom resources, and more lesson plans.   Want to make sure you or your friends don't miss anything in 2010?   Sign up for the Teachers' network and get all the news on the latest education resources from the United States Mint right in your in-box!
