January 2006

Can you believe it's already 2006?  Over the past month, new content has been added to the United States Mint H.I.P. Pocket Change Web site.  To help you learn about "What's New For You," links to this new content are listed below.

As we begin a new year, the United States Mint is honoring the birth of Benjamin Franklin, one of this Nation's original scientists, thinkers and founding fathers, with two commemorative silver dollars.  Just in time to celebrate his 300th birthday, tercentenary, on January 17, the United States Mint will release the "Scientist" and "Founding Father" Silver Dollars.

Games

Games—H.I.P. Pocket Change is celebrating the 2006 Benjamin Franklin Commemorative Coin program with a new game called Franklin's Try-N-Fly.  Only you can put together the snake from Ben Franklin's famous cartoon.  But first you have to neutralize lightning by flying a special kite.  Can you do it?

Coin News

January Coin of the Month—Peter the Mint Eagle is anxious to tell you about his personal hero, Benjamin Franklin and a commemorative coin that honors him.  The Benjamin Franklin "Scientist" commemorative dollar depicts young Ben flying a kite on the obverse, and the "Join, or Die" political cartoon image on the reverse; symbolizing two of his many accomplishments.  The accompanying Teacher Feature, "Tercentenary Celebration," provides a variety of resources to use with your students.
