July 2007

During the past month, new information and activities have been added to the United States Mint H.I.P. Pocket Change™ Web site.  To help you learn "What's New for You," we've listed and linked these features below.

Celebrate Independence Day!— Check out this page to learn more about the Declaration of Independence. This page includes brief informational text about the ratification of the Declaration and an interactive activity based on fun facts about some of its signers. Help your students learn that there is more to the 4th of July than fireworks!

July Coin of the Month— Join Peter as he proudly presents the Idaho quarter. This quarter features one of Pete's cousins, the peregrine falcon. The falcon was the first bird protected under the endangered Species Act in 1969. The quarter also features the state motto "Esto Perpetua", which means "May it be forever".

State Quarter Day in the Classroom—Celebrate the Idaho quarter with State Quarter Day in the Classroom. Read more about the peregrine falcon and find out wha's great about the 43rd state.

Making Cents—The latest issue of this "quarterly" e-newlestter celebrates the Idaho quarter and the latest in Presidential history. There is also a brand new crossword puzzle based on the newslette's contents.  If you'd like to sign up to receive announcements about Making Cents, new lesson plans, and special projects, join the Teachers' Network.

50 State Quarters® Program Lesson Plans—Take a look at these lessons, created specifically to celebrate the Idaho quarter:  "My Happy Habitat" (K and 1), "Poetry to My Ears" (2 and 3), and "Illustrated Beauty" (4-6).  After that, check out the rest of the state-specific plans that are FREE to download, and are available in sets designed specifically for grades K and 1, 2 and 3, and 4 through 6.
