November 2007

During the past month, new information and activities have been added to the United States Mint H.I.P. Pocket Change Web site.  To help you learn "What's New for You," we've listed and linked these features below.

November Coin of the Month:  Join Flip as he celebrates the new Utah quarter.  Utah was the 45th state to join the Union and is now the 45th quarter to be released as part of the 50 State Quarters® Program.  Utah's quarter features two trains facing the golden spike that joined the tracks of the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads in 1869 at Promontory, Utah.  The quarter also features the inscription "Crossroads of the West".

State Quarter Day in the Classroom:  Celebrate the Utah quarter with State Quarter Day in the Classroom.  Learn more about Utah and how it helped to link East and West.

50 State Quarters® Program Lesson Plans:  Take a look at these lessons, created specifically to celebrate the Utah quarter:  Which Came First? (K and 1), I'll Meet You in the Middle (2 and 3), and Read All About It! (4–6).  After that, be sure to check out the rest of the state-specific plans, FREE to download in sets designed specifically for grades K and 1, 2 and 3, and 4 through 6.

Veterans Day:  November is the month we celebrate our nation's veterans.  Be sure to visit our Veterans Day page, which features great information on all of the coins and medals honoring veterans.  This page is linked to several Veterans Day teaching resources, including the Web Quest, lesson plans, and Teacher Features.

Thanksgiving:  Be sure to visit the Thanksgiving Day page to learn why and how we celebrate this special day, who the Pilgrims were, and where you can find related activities for your classroom.

Coins in the Classroom:  Are you interested in learning more about how to incorporate coins in your curriculum?  The American Numismatic Association (ANA) is offering a "Coins in the Classroom" course.  This course is designed specifically to help teachers use coins in their classrooms to augment their curriculum in social studies, mathematics and other related disciplines.  "Coins in the Classroom" will be held November 30-December 1 in Houston, TX.  Please visit the ANA Web site for more information about this educational opportunity!
