March 2008

During the past month, new information and activities have been added to the United States Mint H.I.P. Pocket Change Web site.  To help you learn "What's New for You," we've listed and linked these features below.

March Coin of the Month:  Goldie presents the 2008 Bald Eagle Commemorative Half Dollar.  This coin celebrates an American success story:  the bald eagle.  Learn more about the bald eagle and its importance as a national symbol.

Inside the United States Mint:  This new section allows you to peek inside the buildings that make up the United States Mint.  Each facility (at San Francisco, Denver, Fort Knox, Philadelphia, and West Point) has its own page, describing why it exists, when it was built, what it makes, what interesting things have happened there over the years, and more.  Take the inside tour!

2008 American Bald Eagle Coins:  The American Bald Eagle Recovery and National Emblem Commemorative Coin Act was passed by Congress to recognize the eagle, its importance as a national symbol, and its return from near extinction in the lower 48 states.

Wome's History Month:  The Congressional Gold Medal has been awarded to various women in recognition of their service, contributions, and accomplishments.  As a March (Wome's History Month) activity, explore with Inspector Collecto's collection of these medals.  I's sure to inspire your students to learn about the historic accomplishments of these women.

Time Machine:  At this moment, Nero the Mint Police Dog is setting the dials on the time machine for an adventure in wome's suffrage.  He'll take you to the year 1917, a time during World War I when women were struggling for their right to vote.  you'll find out about Susan B. Anthony and Alice Paul, two leaders in the voting rights movement.  you'll also get the coin connection between Susan B. Anthony and our associated Teacher Feature.
