July 2009

During the past month, new information and activities have been added to the United States Mint H.I.P. Pocket Change™ Web site.  To help you learn "What's New for You," we've listed and linked these features below.

July Coin of the Month:  Join Plinky as she learns more about the territory of American Samoa, the subject of the latest quarter in the District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters Program.

District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters Program Lesson Plans:  Take a look at the lesson plans created specifically to celebrate the American Samoa quarter:  "Patterning the Pacific" (K and 1), "Trading Traditions" (2 and 3), and "In with the Imports" (4–6).  After that, check out the rest of the District of Columbia and U.S. Territories plans that are FREE to download, and are available in sets designed specifically for grades K and 1, 2 and 3, and 4 through 6.

Celebrate Independence Day!  Check out this page to learn about he Declaration of Independence.  This page includes brief informational text about the ratification of the Declaration and two interactive activities based on fun facts about some of its signers.  Help your students learn that there is more to the 4th of July than fireworks!

Making Cents:  The summer issue of this "quarterly" e-newlestter has arrived!  Celebrate two quarters of the quarter, get a peak at the upcoming Braille commemorative, and learn more about "Lincoln Words," the newest game in the H.I.P. Pocket Change cache.  There is also a brand new puzzle based on the newsletter's contents.  If you’d like to sign up to receive announcements about Making Cents, new lesson plans, and special projects, join the Teachers' Network.
