The Man
Byron Nelson (February 4, 1912–September 26, 2006) was an American PGA Tour golfer from 1935 to 1946. He was considered a top player in the sport of golf during the World War II era. His 54 career victories include a record 11 in a row.

The Medal
This medal recognizes Mr. Nelson’s significant contributions to the game of golf as a player, a teacher, and a commentator. The obverse design features a portrait of Byron Nelson with the inscriptions "Byron Nelson 1912-2006" and "Act of Congress 2006." The reverse features a younger Nelson swinging a club. Behind him is a close-up view of a golf ball on a tee. The word "Champion" overlays the image and the words "Player, Teacher, Humanitarian" surround it.
