Earlier this month, Congress honored Addie Mae Collins, Denise McNair, Carole Robertson and Cynthia Wesley with its highest honor, the Congressional Gold Medal. These four young black girls lost their lives in the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, on September 15, 1963. The 16th Street Baptist Church remains a powerful symbol for civil and human rights and is a reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by those who have given their lives for freedom and equality.
Authorized by Public Law 113-111, the United States Mint has struck and issued replica bronze medals of the Congressional Gold Medal awarded posthumously to the victims. The medals are available in 3-inch and 1 ½-inch sizes. The medal's obverse features the silhouette of four young girls, representing those killed on September 15, 1963. Their names, ADDIE MAE COLLINS, DENISE McNAIR, CAROLE ROBERTSON and CYNTHIA WESLEY, are inscribed around the border of the design. The reverse depicts a view of the 16th Street Baptist Church with the inscription KILLED IN THE BOMBING OF THE 16TH ST. BAPTIST CHURCH to the left of the image. We celebrate our declaration of independence on July 4, 1776, but it was in 1787 that the fledgling United States of America formalized its governing structure. September 17 is the date when the final draft of this new Nation's constitution was signed, which we now call Constitution Day. Learn more about the document's story and the men who signed it on the Constitution Day page!
