American Women Quarters 2023 Ornament - Maria Tallchief

The American Women Quarters honor a diverse group of notable American women who made significant contributions in a variety of fields, including suffrage, civil rights, abolition, government, humanities, science, space, and the arts. The women honored are from ethnically, racially, and geographically diverse backgrounds.

Maria Tallchief is considered to be America’s first major prima ballerina who broke barriers as a Native American ballerina.

The ornament’s design elements are a fiery ring around the coin. It and the feathered head piece pay homage to “Firebird,” one of her best known performances. The sparkling purple tutu also ringing the coin represents her role as the Sugar Plum Fairy, which made “The Nutcracker” popular in the U.S. The purple medal represents her National Medal of Arts award. The border design was inspired by traditional Osage patterns and is a tribute to her heritage.

Framed by the ornament is a 2023 quarter with the reverse (tails) design depicting Maria Tallchief spotlit in balletic pose and her Osage name written in Osage orthography, which translates to “Two Standards.” Additional inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “QUARTER DOLLAR,” and “MARIA TALLCHIEF.”
