The coins in this program commemorate the National World War II Memorial and the service, and sacrifice of American soldiers and civilians during World War II. The National World War II Memorial is a special place to gather to have commemorative and educational programs that pay tribute to America’s “Greatest Generation” and their effort to preserve freedoms for generations to come.

Obverse: The design features six figures working together to support the Earth, illustrating the cooperation of each of the military (Army Air Force, Coast Guard, Navy, Army, and Marine Corps) as well as the Merchant Marine during World War II. The inscriptions are “1941-1945,” “WORLD WAR II MEMORIAL,” “DEFENDERS OF FREEDOM,” “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2024.”

Reverse: The design features a view from beneath a Baldacchino sculptural canopy inside a Victory Pavilion in the World War II Memorial. The sculpture depicts four eagles holding a laurel wreath, within which is a globe centered on the Pacific Ocean. The inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “VICTORY,” “IN THE AIR,” “AT SEA,” “ON LAND,” “WWII MEMORIAL,” and “ONE DOLLAR.”

Surcharges in the amount of $10 for each silver dollar sold are authorized to be provided to the non-profit Friends of the National World War II Memorial to support the National Park Service in maintaining and repairing the National World War II Memorial, and for educational and commemorative programs.

Commemorative Coin Programs

Congress authorizes commemorative coins that celebrate and honor American people, places, events, and institutions. Although these coins are legal tender, they are not minted for general circulation. Each commemorative coin is produced by the United States Mint in limited quantity and is only available for a limited time.

As well as commemorating important aspects of American history and culture, these coins help raise money for important causes. Part of the price of these coins is a surcharge that goes to organizations and projects that benefit the community. Since the modern commemorative coin program began in 1982, the United States Mint has raised more than $506,301,189 in surcharges to help build new museums, maintain national monuments like the Vietnam War Memorial, preserve historical sites like George Washington’s home, support various Olympic programs, and much more.

Commemorative coin programs are created by enabling legislation enacted by Congress to honor a person, place or event. The enabling legislation dictates the coin specifications, mintages, cost considerations, and surcharge amount to be collected. A surcharge is a set amount per coin that the Mint collects and distributes to the designated recipient organization which must use the proceeds for the purpose(s) specified in the enabling legislation. Historically, the Mint has been required to pay surcharges to recipients whether or not all the Mint’s program costs were recovered and without any accountability requirements for the recipient organization. In 1996, Congress enacted legislation changing the Mint’s requirement to pay surcharges.

Greatest Generation Commemorative Coin Program

The 2024 Greatest Generation Commemorative Coin Program honors the service and sacrifice of American soldiers and civilians during World War II. Public Law 117-162, the Greatest Generation Commemorative Coin Act, authorizes the U.S. Mint to issue $5 gold coins, $1 silver coins, and half dollar clad coins emblematic of the National World War II Memorial.

Background

The National World War II Memorial honors the spirit, sacrifice, and commitment of the American people to the common defense of the nation during World War II. The groups represented include the 16 million who served in the armed forces of the United States; the more than 400,000 who died; and all who supported the war effort from home by joining the workforce, increasing factory and farm outputs, planting “victory gardens,” and through rationing.

The Memorial is meant to inspire future generations of Americans, deepening their appreciation of the World War II generation’s accomplishments in securing freedom and democracy. Above all, the Memorial stands as an important symbol of American national unity.

The Memorial opened to the public on April 29, 2004, and was dedicated one month later. It is located on the National Mall in Washington, DC.

Recipient Organization

Coin prices include surcharges of $35 for each $5 gold coin, $10 for each silver dollar, and $5 for each clad half dollar. The Public Law authorizes the surcharges to be paid to the Friends of the National World War II Memorial to support the National Park Service in maintaining and repairing the World War II Memorial, and for educational and commemorative programs.
