November 2008

During the past month, new information and activities have been added to the United States Mint H.I.P. Pocket Change Web site.  To help you learn "What's New for You," we've listed and linked these features below.

November Coin of the Month:  Join Bill as he celebrates the new Hawaii quarter.  Hawaii was the 50th state to join the Union and is now the 50th and final quarter to be released as part of the 50 State Quarters® Program.  Hawaii's quarter features a statue of King Kamehameha I facing the eight major islands of Hawaii.  The stat's motto, in Hawaiian, is inscribed beneath the islands.

State Quarter Day in the Classroom:  Celebrate the Hawaii quarter with State Quarter Day in the Classroom.  Learn more about wha's great about the 50th state!

50 State Quarters® Program Lesson Plans:  Take a look at these lessons, created specifically to celebrate the Hawaii quarter:  How Will We Get There? (K and 1), Aloha from the King (2 and 3), and An Island Introduction (4–6).  After that, be sure to check out the rest of the state-specific plans, FREE to download in sets designed specifically for grades K and 1, 2 and 3, and 4 through 6.

Time Machine:  At this moment, Plinky is setting the dials on the Time Machine for a trip to the year 1976.  After the adventure, continue with the "Centennial Sense" Teacher Feature to help your class find out more about Americ's Bicentennial Celebration.

Veterans Day:  November is the month we celebrate our natio's veterans.  Be sure to visit our Veterans Day page, which features great information on all of the coins and medals honoring veterans.  This page is linked to several Veterans Day teaching resources, including the Web Quest, lesson plans, and Teacher Features.

Thanksgiving:  Be sure to visit the Thanksgiving Day page to learn why and how we celebrate this special day, who the Pilgrims were, and where you can find related activities for your classroom.
