May 2009

May Coin of the Month:  Join Goldie as she learns more about proas, lattes, and the new Guam quarter.  The Guam quarter is the third quarter of the 2009 District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters Program.

District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters Program Lesson Plans:  Take a look at these lessons, created specifically to celebrate the District of Columbia quarter: "Isle of Shapes" (K and 1), "Rainforest Writers" (2 and 3), and "Absolutely and Relatively" (4–6).  After that, check out the rest of the territory-specific plans that are FREE to download, and are available in sets designed specifically for grades K and 1, 2 and 3, and 4 through 6.

Lincoln Words:  Check out the newest game on the site!  Lincoln Words is a word find game with some twists, depending on the level you play.  But on all three levels, you just click and drag to select the word when you find it...that is, IF you find it!

Memorial Day:  Be sure to visit the Memorial Day page to learn more about why and how we celebrate this special day, find out what's important about the town of Waterloo, and see some of the coins and medals that honor military people who have died serving our country.

Celebrate Mother's Day:  Invite your students to visit our Games page and make a special card for Mom using Plinky's Create-a-Card (printer required).  You can also ask them which coin features a famous mother and son on the front, then have them visit our Dollar Coin page to check their answer!

Teacher Feature

Teacher Features:  Exploring the Teachers section of H.I.P. Pocket Change is a good way to find great classroom ideas.  And here's another tool for you:  the Teacher Feature icon, sprinkled throughout the site.  Be sure to click on the icon whenever you see it to locate options and ideas that relate directly to whatever you just read!
