Students will understand and describe how volcanoes are formed and how they function. Students will research basic features of volcanoes, specifically the volcanoes of Hawaii. Students will demonstrate an understanding of volcanoes through creative writing.
The teacher will introduce and discuss the system of classifying living things. Students will then research various flora and fauna found at our national sites and the student will classify them as a "taxonomist" using the seven steps of the classification system. Students will show their findings and results through a project of their choice.
The teacher will discuss the concepts of the water cycle and the layers of the Earth. The teacher will introduce the concept of geothermal features. Students will then research how geothermal features are formed and the differences between the two main types. Students will show their findings and results through a project of their choice.
Students will describe the effects that weather and climate have on humans. Students will describe various weather patterns and how they occur. Students will identify ways to prepare for different types of weather.
