Students will research ancient civilizations and develop story problems using symbols and coins from those times. Students will then retell these story problems using modern terms and coins. This lesson is part of the Unit Plan “Ancient and Modern Coins.”

Coin Types: Cent, Nickel, Dime, Quarter, Half Dollar, Dollar
Students will compute unit rates and solve word problems associated with ratios of fractions, including ratios of lengths. Students will analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-worldmathematical problems. Students will develop and produce creative or informational media messages using technology as a tool toresearch, organize, evaluate and communicate information.
Students will solve problems involving the circumference of a circle. Students will solve problems involving scale drawings of geometric figures. Students will use research methods and create models to investigate practical problems and questions.
Students will learn that fifty cents in the past could buy much more than it can today. They will construct graphs showing how the buying power of fifty cents has changed over time. They will also graph how the price of a product has changed over time. Students will also write percentage increase rate problems.
