The United States Mint began issuing $1 coins to honor innovation and innovators as part of the American Innovation™ $1 Coin Program. From 2019 until 2032, the program will release four new designs every year. Each coin will feature an image that shows a significant innovation, innovator, or group of innovators from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the five U.S. territories.
A special coin was issued in 2018 to introduce the new series.
The back of each coin (reverse) will be different, but the obverse (front) will be the same. Each obverse will feature the Statue of Liberty.
The inscriptions include: “$1” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
The reverse will be different for each coin. The design will show a significant innovation, an inventor, or a group of inventors from each state, territory, and the District of Columbia. It will include the required inscription, “United States of America.”
The edge of the coins will include the year that the coin was issued, the mint mark, and “E PLURIBUS UNUM”.
