This ornament represents many aspects of Celia Cruz: from the ruffled dresses she wore early in her career and the colorful wigs and elaborate sequined gowns she wore through the decades to the spotlight and microphone, her unique style and energetic stage presence shines through. The ornament is a nod to one of more than 50 albums she recorded. Cruz electrified audiences worldwide with her famous catchphrase, “¡Azùcar!” (“Sugar!” in Spanish.) What began as a seemingly simple request for sugar in her coffee while at a restaurant, “¡Azùcar!” took on greater significance as a rallying cry in remembrance of all enslaved Afro-Latinos in Cuba and across the Caribbean who were forced to work the sugar cane fields.
The coin’s reverse (tails) design features a dynamic depiction of Celia Cruz flashing her dazzling smile while performing in a rumba-style dress. “¡AZÚCAR!” is inscribed on the right. Additional inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “25₵,” and “CELIA CRUZ.”
