Before he was the 7th President of the United States, Andrew Jackson or “Old Hickory” was a National war hero known for both his strong leadership and quick temper. In the War of 1812, General Jackson led his troops to a stunning victory in the Battle of New Orleans, and as a young man had famously dueled and fatally shot a man who insulted his wife. At age 67, he proved to still be a firebrand when he attacked his would-be assassin with his cane after the first ever assassination attempt on a United States President.
As President, Jackson dissolved the acting National Bank over concerns of corruption and lack of oversight, instead moving federal deposits to State banks. This decision would become an aggravating force in the looming economic Panic of 1837. Jackson also introduced the Indian Removal Act to Congress in 1830, which removed Native Americans within State borders to land west of the Mississippi. Jackson took an aggressive stance against the Nation’s debt, tackling them by curbing national spending and raising money from the sale of federal lands, making him the only U.S. President to get the National debt to $0.
