Founding Father James Monroe was the last President who fought in the Revolutionary War. After the war, he served his Nation in multiple crucial roles. As a Diplomat to France, he negotiated the Louisiana Purchase, one of the largest territorial expansions in United States history. He was appointed first as Secretary of State under James Madison and following the British invasion of Washington D.C. in the War of 1812, he was appointed as Secretary of War, overseeing the American victory. President Madison endorsed him in the next election, and he became the 5th Commander in Chief.
During James Monroe’s Presidency more States were being added to the Union, causing rifts in the Nation over the expansion of slavery into these new territories. This led Monroe to the Compromise of 1820, which banned slavery anywhere north or west of the Missouri River, dividing America into “free” and “slave” States. In 1823, during a routine message to Congress, Monroe warned European powers against expansion into the Western Hemisphere. This became known as the Monroe Doctrine and was a defining moment in American foreign policy, later being invoked by Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy. Monroe followed George Washinton’s precedent, stepping down after two terms and passing the torch to John Quincy Adams.
