John Tyler Presidential Silver Medal

$90.00

John Tyler was the first United States President that was not directly elected. Following the death of President William Henry Harrison, Vice President Tyler was awoken in the middle of the night and quickly rushed to Washington, D.C., where he was sworn in as the 10th President. Dubbed “His Accidency” by his critics, he set what is known as the “Tyler Precedent,” that an ascending Vice President would hold all the same powers and privileges as a President for the remainder of their elected term.

Despite clashing with a Congress that questioned his authority, Tyler made progress under his administration. A chief achievement was the signing of the Log Cabin Bill, allowing frontier settlers who had been living in U.S. territories to claim up to 160 acres of land for a small fee before being offered for sale to the public. Tyler lost the nomination in the next election, and in the final days of his Presidency signed a joint resolution for the annexation of the Texas territory, an action previous Presidents had shied away from in fear of political backlash. Years later, during the Civil War, the former President sided with the Confederacy and became a member of the Confederate House of Representatives. He died in 1862, before the conclusion of the war.
