Released on May 22, 2000, this is the eighth coin released in the 50 State Quarters Program and the third released in 2000. South Carolina, admitted into the Union on May 23, 1788, themed the coin, The Palmetto State. The state's nickname comes from the Palmetto tree, which is featured on this coin, alongside two other state symbols, the Carolina Wren and the Yellow Jessamine flower.
The obverse (heads) design features the familiar image of George Washington by John Flanagan, used on the quarter since 1932.
The reverse (tails) design shows the outline of the state with a star to indicate the state's capital, Columbia. It also shows the Palmetto tree, the Carolina Wren, the Yellow Jessamine, and inscriped is its nickname The Palmetto State.
