Cumberland Island National Seashore Quarter

The 2018 Cumberland Island National Seashore Quarter is the 44th coin in the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program.

Cumberland Island National Seashore in Georgia was established in 1972 to maintain the primitive, undeveloped character of one of the largest and most ecologically diverse barrier islands on the Atlantic coast. There are almost 18 miles of pristine beach open to the public for recreational activities like swimming and walking. The island is also known to have one of the largest oak maritime forests remaining in the U.S., providing an unparalleled visitor experience.

The obverse (heads) design features the familiar image of George Washington by John Flanagan, used on the quarter since 1932. It has been restored to bring out subtle details and the beauty of the original.

The reverse (tails) depicts a snowy egret posing on a branch on the edge of a salt marsh, ready for flight. Design candidates were developed in consultation with representatives of Cumberland Island National Seashore.

The U.S. Mint released the Cumberland Island National Seashore Quarter in circulating, uncirculated, and proof finishes. A five-ounce silver coin was also produced in uncirculated and bullion finishes.
