The 2012 Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park Quarter is the 14th coin in the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program.
Established as Hawaii National Park in 1916, Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park displays the results of 70 million years of volcanism, migration and evolution—processes that thrust a bare land up from the sea, creating unique ecosystems and a distinct human culture. Created to preserve the natural setting of Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes, Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park is one of the most fascinating biological landscapes in the world. The Hawaiian Archipelago, located more than 2,000 miles from the nearest continental land mass, is the most geographically isolated group of islands on Earth. It was first established as a national site on August 1, 1916 (39 Stat. 432).
The obverse (heads) design features the familiar image of George Washington by John Flanagan, used on the quarter since 1932. It has been restored to bring out subtle details and the beauty of the original.
The reverse (tails) depicts an eruption on the east rift of Kilauea Volcano, capturing the magnificent beauty of the volcano. Design candidates were developed in consultation with representatives of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.
The U.S. Mint released the The Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park Quarter in circulating, uncirculated, and proof finishes. A five-ounce silver coin was also produced in uncirculated and bullion finishes.
