Background

Released on July 29, 1994, the U.S. Veterans Prisoner of War Silver Dollar was designed by Department of Veterans Affairs employee Tom Nielsen.

Recipient Organization

The first $3 million of surcharges were authorized to be paid to the Secretary of the Interior for the construction of the Andersonville Prisoner-of-War Museum in Andersonville, Georgia.

After payment of the amount required in the first paragraph, the Secretary of the Treasury was authorized to pay 50 percent of the remaining surcharges to the endowment fund established pursuant to section 209a (Andersonville Prisoner-of-War Museum Endowment Fund). After payment of the amount required by the first paragraph, the Secretary was authorized to pay 50 percent of the remaining surcharges to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for purposes of maintaining national cemeteries pursuant to chapter 24 of title 38, United States Code. 

Characteristics

The obverse design features a chained eagle breaking free through a ring of barbed wire.

The reverse features the proposed design for the National Prisoner of War Museum.
