Background

Released on February 21, 1997, this coin commemorates the United States Botanic Garden, a living museum of flowers and plants established in Washington, DC by the founding fathers; George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. President James Monroe signed legislation in 1820 that led to the creation of the U.S. Botanic Garden.

Recipient Organization

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the coins will go to the National Fund for the United States Botanic Garden to fund the National Garden in Washington, D.C.

Commemorative coin programs are created by acts of Congress to honor a person, place, or event. Surcharges from the sales of these coins help fund a variety of organizations and projects that benefit the public. Commemorative coins are only available from the United States Mint for a limited time, as specified by public law.

Characteristics

Obverse design: The coin features a rendition of America's national flower, the rose, beneath a detailed rose garland.

Reverse design: The coin features a multi-arched French façade of the U.S. Botanic Garden.
