Released on March 31, 1995, this coin was authorized in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the protection of Civil War battlefields.
Sales included a surcharge of $35 per coin for the five dollar coins, $7 per coin for the one dollar coins, and $2 per coin for the half dollar coins paid to the Civil War Battlefield Foundation for the preservation of historically significant Civil War battlefields.
The obverse design of the coin features a Civil War bugler on horseback sounding out a call to the troops.
The reverse of the coin features the image of a bald eagle holding a banner that reads "Let us Protect and Preserve."
