Background
The United States Congressional coin was first struck on June 14, 1989 at a ceremony outside of the Capitol. It commemorates the Bicentennial of the U.S. Congress.
Recipient Organization
Fifty percent of the first $40 million in surcharges were authorized to go to the Capitol Preservation Fund for use by the United States Capitol Preservation Commission. The balance of the surcharges received by the Secretary were to be deposited in the general fund of the Treasury for the sole purpose of reducing the national debt.
Characteristics
The obverse design of the coin features a rendition of the Capitol Dome.
The reverse of the coin features a portrait of the majestic eagle over looking the canopy in the Old Senate Chamber.
