Constitution Bicentennial Gold $5 Coin

Background

Released in 1987, this coin was authorized to commemorate the Bicentennial of the Constitution of the United States.

Recipient Organization

All sales included a surcharge of $35 per coin for the $5 gold and $7 for the silver dollar. The law stipulated that an amount equal to the amount of all surcharges received by the Secretary from the sale of coins was to be deposited in the general fund of the Treasury for the sole purpose of reducing the national debt. No recipient organization was listed. 

Characteristics

The obverse design of the coin features a linear stylized flying eagle with a quill pen in his talons.

The reverse of the coin features the Constitutional slogan, "We the People", a quill pen, and 13 stars.
