The George Washington 250th Anniversary Half Dollar was released in 1982 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of George Washington's birth.
The law prescribed that surcharges should not be more than 20 percent the cost of minting and distributing half-dollar coins (including labor, materials, dies, use of machinery, promotion, and overhead expenses). An amount equal to the amount of all surcharges received from the sale of half-dollar coins was deposited in the general fund of the Treasury for the sole purpose of reducing the national debt.
The obverse design features George Washington astride a horse.
The reverse features Mt. Vernon.
