Released on February 15, 1991, this commemorative coin honors of the 50th Anniversary of Mount Rushmore. It was unveiled at a ceremony held in Ford's Theatre in South Dakota.
Surcharges were authorized with 50 percent paid to the Federal Treasury for purposes of reducing the national debt and 50 percent to the Mount Rushmore National Memorial Society of Black Hills to assist the Society's efforts to improve, enlarge, and renovate the Mount Rushmore National Memorial.
The obverse design on the coin features the American Eagle in flight over Mount Rushmore and six stars on the right edge.
The reverse features the inscription, Mount Rushmore National Memorial.
