Background

Released on May 2, 1995, the Special Olympics World Games Silver Dollar commemorated the Special Olympics World Games and recognized the achievements of participants. Congress authorized the Mint to issue up to 800,000 $1 silver coins.

Surcharges were authorized to be paid by the Secretary to the 1995 Special Olympics World Games Organizing Committee, Inc. to:

  1. provide a world class sporting event for athletes with mental retardation
  2. demonstrate to a global audience the extraordinary talents, dedication, and courage of persons with mental retardation; and
  3. underwrite the cost of staging and promoting the 1995 Special Oljnnpics World Games.

Characteristics

The obverse design features a portrait of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, the founder of the Special Olympics. This was the first U.S. coin to portray a living woman. 

The reverse features an image of the Special Olympics Medal, a rose, and a quote from Mrs. Shriver.
