Background

The Stone Mountain Memorial Half Dollar was released in 1925 to commemorate the effort, begun in 1923, to carve the Stone Mountain Memorial in Georgia.

Recipient Organization

The legislation stated: "That the coins herein authorized shall be issued only upon the request of the executive committee of the Stone Mountain Confederate Monumental Association, a corporation of Atlanta, Georgia, and upon payment by such executive committee for and on behalf of the Stone Mountain Confederate Monumental Association of the par value of such coins, and it shall be permissible for the said Stone Mountain Confederate Monumental Association to obtain said coins upon said payment, all at one time or at separate times, and in separate amounts, as it may determine."

Characteristics

The obverse design features equestrian figures of generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. (Stonewall) Jackson reviewing the Confederate armies.

The reverse features an eagle, emblematic of liberty, poised on a mountain crag with stars dimly visible in the background.
